Reports of physical or sexual abuse are received by the State Attorney’s office from either a law enforcement agency or the Department of Children and Families. The Crimes Against Children Unit is a specialized felony prosecution division within each county office of the State Attorney. This unit focuses exclusively on the preparation and prosecution of felony crimes of child sexual abuse and physical child abuse. This unit is staffed with experienced felony attorneys who specialize in the prosecution of crimes involving child victims, and who have the training and expertise to deal with the unique challenges presented in these cases. This division also includes an experienced attorney who handles Jimmy Ryce sexual predator commitment cases, where civil proceedings are held to hold certain sex offenders in involuntary confinement beyond expiration of their criminal sentence. Our Crimes Against Children Unit is also staffed by specialized victim advocates. They assist victims and their families through the criminal justice process and provide other services or referrals to crime victims.
